Conclusion

Conclusion

The school library has the potential to be the heart of the school. It is possible that some day the first thing a student will think of when given a homework assignment, or discovering a new interest, will be going to the school librarian for assistance. The new schools that are being built are moving in the right direction. The libraries in the newer schools are bigger and brighter than they used to be with large windows inviting people to come in and look around. While in the library people should be able to find good information that will support their curriculum needs and provide materials that will provoke interest in new topics.

The research compiled by our group suggests there are some common areas that need improvement before Nova Scotia school libraries will be able to provide the best possible service for their communities. Better communication supported by policy development at the board level and enriched by larger budgets would enable school libraries to function more effectively, ensuring their collections are fully utilized and helping students and teachers stay fully engaged in lifelong learning.
